After the death of her husband, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, Elizaveta Feodorovna Romanova, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the Grand Duchess of the Romanov royal family, sold her jewelry and bought a mansion on Bolshaya Ordynka st. with four houses and a large garden, where she founded the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy in 1909.

According to the plan of Elizaveta Feodorovna, the abode was to provide integrated, spiritual, educational and medical assistance to people in need who were often not only feed and given clothes, but assisted in finding employment, and put in the hospital. Often persuaded by the sisters families who could not give their children a fine nurture (e.g. professional beggars, drunkards, etc.) were sendin their children to a shelter, where they were given education, proper care and the profession.

Hospital was set up in the monastery, a great clinic and a pharmacy where the medicines were given free of charge, shelter, soup kitchen, and other facilities. In the church of Holy Protection Monastery held lectures and talks, meetings of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, the Geographical Society.
