Tour To Novodevichy Convent
Novodevichy Convent is truly a unique site in the center of Moscow: place of seclusion inside a crowded megalopolis. It was founded by tzar Vasily III in the year 1524 and has changed drastically throughout the time of its existence. It was being used as a nunnery and played an important role in defending the city.
When you walk in through the gates, you see all the beauty of this extremely gorgeous place: white and red Baroque lace is reflected in the surface of a pond. Architecture of the monastery is charming, especially the overall impression you get by visiting the Smolenskiy Cathedral, which is located next to the monastery. Besides that you will see graves of prominent Russian scientists, writers, public figures and military leaders.
There is also a dramatic story related to the Novodevichy Convent regarding sister of Peter I the Great – tsarevna Sophie, which was imprisoned in the monastery for participating in rebellion against her brother.
At the beginning of twentieth century nunnery was closed down and the whole building has been converted into a museum of Free Women. Most buildings have been destroyed forever, others were used as warehouses and landfills. Only after the restoration monastery resumed its monastic life and now it works as a museum and a nunnery at the same time.
