In the third decade of 20th century population of Moscow was growing rapidly. Transport system was no longer able to serve the city properly, so Stalin decided to solve the problem by initiating the building of rapid transit system.

According to his plan Moscow Metro was not only supposed to serve as a transport, but also show all the possibilities and achievements of socialism. Marble, iron, bronze, steel and glass were being mined all over the Soviet Union to create the most distinctive underground system ever. The first line – red line – has opened its doors in 1935 and involved 13 stations.

With its route length of 301.2 kilometres, it has 182 stations opened at the moment. All stations are different from each other and every station has its own theme and idea. Most of them are decorated with mosaic and sculpture to reflect Soviet and Russian history and to praise cultural values.

You will be amazed how magnificient Moscow Metro is, and how useful it is at the same time for the residents.
