Tour To Saint Isaac's Cathedral
Saint Isaac's Cathedral is the biggest Orthodox Cathedral in St. Petersburg. It was built in 1818-1858 under supervision of Nikolay II by architect Auguste de Montferrand and it is a key monument in Russian history which is dedicated to St. Isaac of Dalmatia.
After the Revolution the Cathedral became Museum of Scientific Atheism, and all religious attributes and sculptures were plundered: over 45 kilograms of gold were stolen from the Cathedral.
During the Great Patriotic War the Cathedral was painted gray to avoid artillery fire, but unfortunately nonetheless it was under fire several times and the building still has spots left from shells. After the fall of communism the Cathedral partly resumed its service as a church and opened its doors for tourists. In the 50s the whole building was restored and now inside the Cathedral there are almost 400 items of mosaic, sculpture and icons.
If you go upstairs to the main dome, you will get to the observation platform, from which you can enjoy the full panoramic view of St. Petersburg.
